Ther at least 13 serotype (strains) of meningococcal
disease. The most common strains seen in the UK are groups B and C. Group C disease now accounts for less than 10% of cases, with group B disease accounting for over 80% of cases.
There are also vaccines for the meningococcal strains A, W135 and Y, which are common in other countries. It is recommended that people travelling to countries in sub-Saharan Africa and Saudi Arabia
should be immunised with these.
