How common is diphtheria?

Following the introduction of immunisation against diphtheria on a national scale in 1940 there was a dramatic fall in the number of notified cases and deaths from the disease.

From 1986-2002, 103 cases of toxigenic diphtheria were identified and 2 deaths were reported.
